“I Always Feel Lucky”

I love Wordnik. If you’re not familiar, it’s a dictionary site that goes above and beyond the usual definition + synonym setup of other dictionary services. They give you synonyms, antonyms, hypernyms, hyponyms,”reverse dictionary” (words with the word in their definition), and words often used in the same context. Add in the social features, like the ability to “love” words and make lists of words, and it’s a real winner.

Anyway, today I went to Wordnik to lookup a word I didn’t know, and I saw something new that made me smile. On the front page, where you would usually see an “Enter” or “Search” button, it instead says, “I always feel lucky”. On a site with a heart in their logo, and “All the Words” in their title bar, this is just another thing that makes me feel like it’s run by actual humans.

In the early days of computers and the web, technology was cold and hard, and often lacked any real emotion or human touch. I feel lucky to have grown up in a time where that hasn’t been true. I’ve always felt lucky. I always feel lucky.
